Jean Thompson, RN
Radiation Medicine Department

Hudson Valley Magazine's Excellence in Nursing Award - 2011
Every clinical professional knows that we would not be able to do our jobs and impact our patients without the other professionals standing beside us, which is why we chose this year to nominate two nurses from our Radiation Medicine Department.
Jean Thompson, RN, is an experienced nurse in the Radiation Medicine Department for many years. She sees and cares for each one of Westchester Medical Center’s patients who receives radiation therapy. She cares for the patients as they traverse the radiation treatment highway, this experienced nurse has helped countless patients through the twists and turns and sometimes unexpected bumps of inpatient, outpatient, and completion therapy.
During the patients’ “travels” Jean supplies them with education about their condition and treatment. Teaching is the primary responsibility for the nurses in radiation medicine as they meet with each patient to let them know what to expect from their treatments, and give each person a chance to ask questions, and share concerns. Jean has a special ability to know what her patients’ need, even when it is just a supportive ear.
In addition, Jean has been actively involved in assisting the initiation of GYN procedures in the Radiation Medicine Department to decrease the length of stay for patients in the ambulatory setting.
