April is Donate Life Month
Today, according to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN), there are nearly 11,000 New Yorkers are the waiting lists for organ transplant. 8,775 are in need of a kidney transplant, more than 1,400 people need a liver and about 350 people are waiting for heart transplants—just in New York State alone.
April is Donate Life Month—a time when we are reminded of the overwhelming and critical need for organs and tissue for transplantation.
“One person who donates their organs (hearts, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas and intestines) can save up to eight lives,” said Eileen Farrington, RN, Director of Transplant Services at Westchester Medical Center. “A tissue donor (corneas, bone, skin, heart valves, tendons, veins, etc.) can improve 12 or more lives by restoring eyesight or helping to fight infections or preventing disability or the loss of mobility in burn patients.”
Unfortunately, statistics have shown that as many as 700 people may die in New York State each year while waiting for organ donations—that’s about two people every day.
New Yorkers can provide a generous gift of life simply by indicating their wishes on their driver’s license or by enrolling in the Donate Life Registry. Most importantly, after enrolling in the confidential registry, which is administered by the New York State Department of Health, New Yorkers are encouraged to discuss their wishes with their loved ones, informing them of their desire to be an organ and/or tissue donor.
Thousands of lives are saved each year through the generosity of organ donation. It is truly the most unselfish and benevolent act one human being can perform for another.
