U.S. News & World Report Places Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center with the Nation’s Best in its 2014-15 Children’s Hospital Rankings

VALHALLA, NY – June 10, 2014 – Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center – the children’s hospital for New York’s Hudson Valley region and Fairfield County, Connecticut – has been nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report in its 2014-15 Best Children’s Hospital rankings in the pediatric pulmonology and pediatric gastroenterology/GI surgery specialty areas.

The Best Children’s Hospitals rankings highlight the publication’s top 50 U.S. facilities in advanced pediatric care specialties.

“U.S. News continues to place Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center among the best children’s hospitals in the nation in multiple categories.  This recognition is due in large measure to the dedicated effort of the hospital’s outstanding clinical and support staff,” explained Michael Gewitz, M.D., Physician-in-Chief, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center.

Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital cared for its first patients in September 2004 and in just 10 years it has become  one of the nation’s leading pediatric advanced-care centers,” continued Dr. Gewitz.  “These rankings further attest to the high level of expert care provided by the hospital.  Families are now coming from across the country and beyond to Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center for the care of their children.”

“Every Best Children’s Hospital deserves high praise,” said U.S. News Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow. “We know how important it is to parents to have confidence in pediatric centers that show dedication and expertise in caring for a child facing a life-threatening, rare or demanding illness.”

Recognized Specialty Areas
Families from the region and beyond visit Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital for the expertise offered by the hospital’s division of Pediatric Pulmonology, Allergy and Sleep Medicine.  The team cares for children with asthma, allergies, cystic fibrosis, recurrent pneumonias, sleep apnea and a wide array of congenital and acquired illnesses that affect the respiratory tract. Its asthma clinical research center is part of a nationwide network
sponsored by the American Lung Association; the division plays host to the region’s only cystic fibrosis center, which is accredited by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation; operates pulmonary function and exercise laboratories and welcomes children into Westchester Medical Center’s pediatric sleep center for diagnosis.

The hospital’s Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition cares for children with digestive problems, liver disease and nutritional disorders. In addition to general pediatric gastroenterology, nutrition and hepatology services, the division collaborates on patient care with Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital’s exceptional pediatric gastroenterology hepatobiliary surgery team, which has the most comprehensive and advanced pediatric minimally-invasive surgery program in the region.  The division also works with Westchester Medical Center’s established liver surgery and transplant team, which has success rates well above national averages.

Pulmonology and gastroenterology/GI surgery are just two of the hospital’s many advanced pediatric specialties, which include hematology and oncology, cardiovascular, trauma and burn care, neurosurgery and more.
