“FROM THE HANDS OF KINGS” DONATE
HAND-CROCHETED HATS TO THE REDL CENTER FOR CANCER CARE AT MIDHUDSON REGIONAL HOSPITAL

Dutchess County resident Dorothy King McAurthur founder of “From the Hands of Kings” and her sister Joan King Foley recently visited the Redl Center for Cancer Care at MidHudson Regional Hospital (MHRH) to present about 100 hand-crocheted hats for cancer patients being treated at the center as well as for pediatric oncology patients at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center.

Dorothy and Joan along with their five other sisters, Louise King Klemm of New Jersey, Sara Anne King Williams of Connecticut, Marion King Stark of Hampton Bays, NY, Lorraine King Wilkinson and Joyce King Collins of Florida began crocheting caps in February, 2014 for cancer patients who had experienced hair loss as a result of their cancer treatment.  “We wanted to help them feel better about themselves,” said Joan King Foley.

All seven of the King Sisters participate in the crocheting of the colorful hats, many of which feature special detail, such as multi-colored patterns or flower motifs that are suitable to be worn by both men and women as well as by children.  “Everybody looks at the variety of hats and they see their story,” added Dorothy King McArthur.

The group was introduced to the Redl Center by Foley’s daughter, Jennifer Bland, who happens to be the Café Supervisor at MHRH.

Mary Luvera, RN, MS, Director of Oncology Services at MHRH Diana Silverman, DO, Breast Program Leader, gratefully received the gifts on behalf of the patients along with Diane Froman, RN, Cancer Care Coordinator and began distributing the hats right away to some of the patients that were in the center for treatment.
