Surgery (General)

Westchester Medical Center is one of two participating academic medical centers for the New York Medical College Department of Surgery Residency Program. The program consists of six divisions: General Surgery; Trauma/Surgical Critical Care; Cardiothoracic Surgery; Pediatric Surgery; Vascular, Endo-Vascular and Transplant Surgery; and Burns and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

About the Program

Combined with rotations at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Westchester Medical Center's surgical residency is a comprehensive program providing broad exposure to a wide variety of surgical specialties. The Surgical Residency at Westchester Medical Center is a five-year program designed to develop general surgeons through extensive education and experience in the areas of general surgery, cardiothoracic and general thoracic surgery, pediatric surgery, peripheral vascular surgery, plastic and reconstructive and burn surgery, trauma and surgical critical care, surgical oncology, colo-rectal surgery and minimally invasive laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery.

A crucial and unique component to the Surgical Residency is the de-emphasis of fellowship programs. General surgery residents perform over 90 percent of surgeries under the direct supervision of highly qualified attending surgeons in all of the above listed specialty areas. Westchester Medical Center is also widely recognized for its physiologic approach to surgery, training residents early on in the importance of managing the hemodynamic, pulmonary, renal, hepatic and metabolic derangements of surgery patients.

The Surgical Residency Program at Westchester Medical Center offers fellowships and specialization in the following areas:

  • Surgical Critical Care
  • Minimally Invasive/Laparoscopic Surgery
  • Transplant Surgery (Liver/Kidney)
