Dr. Thornton was the first African-American woman in the United States to be board-certified in High-Risk obstetrics (Maternal-Fetal Medicine), to be accepted into The New York Obstetrical Society and to be invited as an oral board examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Thornton was one of the original American investigators who pioneered early prenatal diagnostic testing known as CVS (chorionic villus sampling). Dr. Thornton has served on the faculties of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Cornell (Weill) University Medical College and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She joined the faculty of New York Medical College in 2008 and is a Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Her biography is presently in Who’s Who in America, Wikipedia and Who’s Who in the World. She has been listed in The Best Doctors — New York Metro Area, as well as in New York Magazine as one of the top ten Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists in New York City.

Dr. Thornton was the first female African American Perinatologist.

Her most recent research has been focused on obesity in pregnancy.
