Department of Medicine

The Department of Medicine is the largest clinical group of physicians at Westchester Medical Center and is responsible for the medical care of all adults and adolescents over 15 years of age. It encompasses highly qualified physicians in general internal medicine (primary medical care), hematology/hemostasis (blood and clotting disorders), oncology (cancer), nephrology (kidney diseases and dialysis), rheumatology (joint diseases), pulmonary and critical care (chest diseases and intensive care), cardiology (heart and blood vessel diseases and cardiac catheterization), gastroenterology (stomach, intestinal and liver disorders), infectious diseases (infections) endocrinology (diseases of the glands, diabetes, thyroid, obesity and osteoporosis), allergy, and complementary medicine (acupuncture).

Many of our Department's physicians are nationally recognized experts in their fields and are active in cutting-edge research. All are renowned medical educators and teachers of medical students and medical residents.

Message from the Director

Welcome to the Department of Medicine at Westchester Medical Center. Our department offers outstanding inpatient and outpatient primary and subspecialty care in every area of internal medicine. Our attending physicians have trained at and have been recruited from leading institutions in the United States and they also direct outstanding teaching programs here in our own institution. Our physicians also serve as the core clinical faculty members of New York Medical College, and they are actively engaged in clinical research and teaching. They are leaders in their fields, regionally and nationally.

Because of the quality and wide-ranging expertise and experience of our physicians, we are able to care for patients with the most complex medical problems imaginable. Our ability to offer comprehensive clinical care means that all of a patient’s medical needs can be met within our department and within the larger medical center, with its staff of outstanding physicians and surgeons in every discipline, including surgery, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, and interventional and diagnostic radiology. We have expanded our outpatient practices in general internal medicine and all of the medical subspecialties in the Hawthorne practices, the Ambulatory Care Pavilion at Westchester Medical Center, and at other locations in Westchester.

We look forward to caring for you and to meeting all of your medical needs.

Sincerely,

Neil W. Schluger, M.D.
Director, Department of Medicine, Westchester Medical Center
