Spider Veins?

Spider veins are also known as telangiectasia and occur at the earliest stages of venous insufficiency. They are formed by small skin veins that become dilated and are visible through the skin's surface. They can be blue, purple or red and are frequently extensive, forming various patterns of linear, starburst, or tree-like distribution. In the legs, they may be associated with varicose veins and venous insufficiency. They can be present in all areas of the body, including the face and the back.

Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are abnormal veins that become large and tortuous. As a result, varicose veins bulge out and can be seen through the skin. They appear as rope-like structures protruding out from the skin and can occur throughout the legs and ankles. Varicose veins occur due to a disease called "venous reflux." Healthy veins have tiny leaflets inside of them called valves. They allow blood to flow in one direction from the ankles towards the heart. When valves do not work, blood backs up in the legs and causes increased pressure in them. This causes the veins to enlarge and causes symptoms such as pain, heaviness, cramping, itching and burning of the skin. In advanced cases, this can lead to skin pigmentation, ulceration and bleeding.

Reticular Veins

Reticular veins are considered a more advanced stage of venous disorder. They are formed by larger veins that are located deeper in the skin's surface with venous reflux. They are usually blue and purple in color, tortuous frequently feeding the areas of spider veins. In contrast to varicose veins, both spider and reticular veins do not protrude on the skin surface. Reticular veins may form areas of unattractive clusters of veins predominantly located on the inner part of thighs, backs of legs and ankles. They can also be associated with symptoms of pain and discomfort of the legs. For advanced treatment of reticular veins, Atrium Laser Vein Center located in Westchester NY, is the first easy step towards a pain-free, more confident life.

Laser Treatment

Laser treatments are performed to remove unsightly spider veins. Laser surgery is applied to small veins, which causes the vessel walls to coagulate and then disappear. A polarized light device is used for better visualization of veins below the skin. A cooling device is also applied for comfort as well as protection of the skin. This procedure can be done for spider veins on the legs and face as well as on other areas of the body.

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a method of injecting varicose veins with a solution that causes the vein wall to become sticky. Compression is then applied, which causes the vein to close up and eventually be absorbed by the body. Sclerotherapy generally requires several treatment sessions. The majority of patients with small varicosity can be effectively treated with sclerotherapy. Currently, a newer approach of using foam as a sclerosing agent is employed with improved results.

How is sclerotherapy done?

Sclerotherapy is performed in our office. Patients undergo sclerotherapy with an injection through a very fine needle. Most patients are able to tolerate the procedure without much discomfort. After the procedure, compression bandage and stockings are applied to the leg. You should wear compression stockings continuously for three days, and then during the day for one additional week.

What you need to do before the procedure?

If you have compression hosiery from previous treatments, please bring them with you so we can make sure they will provide adequate support after the sclerotherapy procedure. You can also purchase compression stockings in our office.

What are the side effects of sclerotherapy?

Certain side effects may be experienced after sclerotherapy. Larger injected varicose veins may become lumpy and hard for several months before resolving. Raised red areas may appear at the injection sites and should disappear within a few days. Brown lines or spots on the skin may be noted at the site of the injection. In most cases, they disappear within three to six months. Bruising may occur around the injection site and can last several days or weeks.

What happens after the treatment?

After the treatment, you will be able to drive yourself home. You may resume your regular activities and are encouraged to walk one mile daily. You will be instructed to wear support hosiery or compression wraps to "compress" the treated vessels. You should wear compression stockings continuously for three days and then during the day for an additional week. Stockings can be purchased at the vein center. Do not take hot baths or sit in a whirlpool or sauna, nor apply hot compresses or any form of heat to the injected areas for 72 hours after treatment. In addition, avoid direct exposure to sunlight (sun bathing and tanning beds), and running for seven days after the procedure.
